Responsible for just 0,05% of the world’s bitcoin mining Kuwait is already experiencing power outages it’s blaming on cryptocurrency mining, although it mentions expanding and growing population as well as delayed maintenance of some plants.
Its relatively cheap electricity is of interest to miners who place their servers in climates that are colder and where electricity is cheap. Homes used for mining have been targeted in a security operation last week after Kuwait already banned cryptocurrency trading and called cryptocurrency mining illegal.
The crackdown comes before the summer season when heat will bring additional pressure on the electrical grid.
The power crisis in the country is very real and serious where the government has instructed citizens not to waste electricity.
Similarly in Kosovo and Russia authorities targeted cryptocurrency miners to prevent power shortages. Kuwait has a relatively small total electricity consumption and just a very small share of the total bitcoin mining can cause blackouts.
